Ryobi is to tools as spam is to steak.
they break down quick and lack power.
Makita, Milwakee,Dewalt are a few choices of better brands among many.
my husband swears by his DeWalt tools.
Makita is better over quality and sturdier. Ryobi does tend to be a bit dodgy….
Milwaukee makes the best corded drill for my money and DeWalt makes the best cordeless.
A Makita is so much better than the Ryobi, but we’ve had problems with our Makitas, too. We decided to try a Hitachi and it’s put the Makitas to shame. They’re sold at Lowe’s.
I wouldn’t buy either, Dewalt is the best in my opinion.
I did a comparison of 7 different drills in a recent podcast. The Makita came out on top for their corded and for their cordless. It was not an exhaustive test but was a good indication of Makita quality. Milwaukee also did well. B&D was bad, Craftsman bad.
Give it a listenhttp://www.handyguyspodcast.com/63/episo…
A Makita is better. Some of the cheaper 12 volt ones just don’t have the guts that an 18 volt Makita has. Also the cheaper one the batters burn up and are usually as expensive to buy as a new cheap drill, If you can find them at all. A Mikita will be easy to find replacement batteries. Let him get the drill, In return it will pay for its self in just things you want fixed.
Makita is a very good brand. However is price is part of the equation go with the high voltage firestorms by Black and Decker. It is basically the same as a DeWalt (B&D makes Dewalt) and cost alot less. I have a 24 volt Firestorm that has out preformed any other drill iv seen. Also it has enough power to break your wrist if he gets on a tough enough bolt.
Makita is a good brand. My husband prefers Milwaukee. He works with it everyday and they just seem to last longer and are more durable.
I read all the answers. I have a makita 18v NiMh. cordless…good drill. I also have a milwaukee 18v litheum ion….also very good drill. I use these professionally. My favorite drill which also has the best power to weight ratio on the market is the Panasonic 15.6v drill. I know, you think panasonic only makes stereos. Go to a tool store that sells them along with all the others and ask someone. However, if your husband is a do it yourselfer around the house but not a tradesman the Ryobi should be more than adequate. He probably has a buddy that has a Makita and it’s a macho thing.
From what I’ve been reading (I just bought a Ryobi too), the return on investment is very good for Ryobi (better home user level, NOT pro user level). The pro level drills are better though. DeWalt, Mekita, Milwaukee, even Rigid (there are plenty of others).
It could be that he bought an underpowered drill. I paid a little extra for an 18v, but I think it will work out compared to the 9.6v, 12 or even 14.4v drills I could have bought.
